La dégradation des conditions des journalistes dans les pays en guerre a été pointée comme au Soudan, en RDC, au Mali ou encore au Burkina Faso. RSF note également une dépendance économique de plus en plus accrue des médias aux gouvernements et aux annonceurs affaiblissant ainsi leur neutralité. C'est le cas selon l'ONG au Cameroun, au Togo ou encore au Sénégal.
